U.S. Supreme Court Justice
    (June 25, 1954- )
Born in The Bronx, New York
Barack Obama's nominee to replace David Souter on the United States Supreme Court (2009)
Circuit judge, U.S. Court of Appeals second circuit (appointed in 1998)
    U.S. District Court judge (1992-1998)
Some conservative commentators, like Pat Buchanan, thought she was an 'affirmative action' choice.
Many right-wing groups only cared about where she stood on one single issue: abortion (what a shock!).
Due to her diabetes, some questioned whether she would be healthy enough to stay on the court for an extended period of time.
She was inspired to become a judge after watching an episode of 'Perry Mason.'
A case involving the New Haven Fire Department's promotional test turned out to be the ruling she faced the most scrutiny for.
She publicly stated her experiences as a Latina woman gave her a different perspective than a white male might have, giving her white male critics fuel for their fire.
She grew up in a housing project.
She graduated Princeton summa cum laude, and later earned her law degree at Yale.
She was the first Latina considered for nomination to the Supreme Court.
She had to deal with sexist critics who wondered if her emotions would cloud her judgment (the emotions of male judges are never called into question).
The American Bar Association Journal described her as a centrist with liberal inclinations.
When she issued an injunction against MLB team owners for violating the National Labor Relations Act, the longest strike in MLB history ended and the 1995 season was salvaged.
