    Her run for the Democratic presidential nominee was largely ignored.
    She appeared on 'The Daily Show' saying that she wouldn't drop out of the race. She dropped out the next day.
    After dropping out of the race, she endorsed Howard Dean.
    She supports Affirmative Action.
    She was a one term senator.
    The Republican National Committee said of her: 'A controversial liberal who was rejected by her own state...the record shows that she is an out-of-the-mainstream big city politician.'
    She was the first African-American female Senator, and the first African American Democratic Senator.
    During the Democratic debates, she was not afraid to share her opinions on controversial issues such as gay marriage.
    Her colleagues called her 'the conscience' of the Illinois state house.
    She is a strong supporter of education, the environment, women's rights and social and economic justice.
    She criticized the Bush administration for labeling those who opposed the Iraq War as 'unpatriotic.'
    She said of Jesse Helms: 'He saw me standing there, and he started to sing, 'I wish I was in the land of cotton.' And he looked at Senator Hatch and said, 'I'm going to make her cry. I'm going to sing Dixie until she cries.' And I looked at him and said, 'Senator Helms, your singing would make me cry if you sang 'Rock of Ages.''
    She taught law & political science at Morris Brown College and DePaul University.
