Monarch
    (June 9, 1672-January 28, 1725)
Also known as 'Peter the Great'
Became Tzar with his half brother Ivan V under the patronage of his sister Sofia (1682)
A failed coup d'etat left Sofia exiled to a convent (1689)
Lead forces against the Ottoman Empire (1695)
Officially became full tzar after the death of his co-Tzar, Ivan V (1698)
    Founded St. Petersburg (1703)
Defeated the Swedish Empire in the Ukraine (1709)
Moved the capital to St. Petersburg (1712)
Waged war against Persia, which gained Russia land near the Caspian Sea
He traveled Europe undercover as a diplomat, learning many European trades such as ship building. During this time, he had a reputation of trashing the homes he stayed in during his wild parties.
He had a huge sense of his own importance which often resulted in him not paying attention to the rules. Example: after leaving a hotel in Paris one day, he took a carriage that didn't belong to him and just calmly drove away.
He played war games as a child, creating his own armies from commoners and courtiers, and gave them real weapons to fight each other with.
He named a city after himself and then moved the official Russian capital to that city.
Several coup attempts against him ended in mass executions.
He tripled taxes through various means to pay for his reforms, including a 'head tax,' which one paid for merely living in Russia.
To encourage people to look western, he taxed people with beards, along with nobles who didn't wear European style clothing.
He couldn't sit for very long, and would leap out of his chair during banquets and run into the next room to stretch his legs.
He was a perfectionist, having to perfect every new technique before he could consider whether or not it was of use to him.
He thought of himself to be a good surgeon and dentist because of his skill and dexterity as a craftsman, and would offer his services to people with ailments.
He had to overcome a violent power struggle.
He rightly engineered Russia to follow the business and government models of the West, and was obsessed with bringing Russia out of the medieval traditions.
He was 6'8 and had the presence of a great world leader.
He wasn't afraid of physical labor and was involved heavily in building St. Petersburg, a city he chartered.
He himself was a master craftsman in 14 different trades.
He openly mocked the Russian Orthodox church, installing a 'Most Drunken Synod of Fools and Jesters,' which had a 'Prince-Pope,' also known as the 'Noisiest, all jesting Patriarch of Moscow.'
He turned his country from a backwards nation to one of the most powerful nations in the world, along with being an emerging European superpower.
He created the 'Table of Rank' which stated a commoner could climb on merit to the highest positions.
His mannerisms and actions were that of a die-hard activist, in a position of power where activism was not at all seen before.
    He had an inspiring personality.
He is still beloved by his people to this day.
