(June 21, 1967- )
Born in San Kamphaeng, Thailand
28th Prime Minister of Thailand (July 2011– )
Pheu Thai (‘for Thailand’) Party
Sister of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra
Why she might be annoying
Her nickname is ‘Pu’ (‘crab’).
Her son’s nickname is Pipe (born Supasek).
When she does interviews in English – with a really thick accent – she sometimes trips over her words.
Most of her business achievements came where and when her brother – who referred to her as his clone – had a significant position (e.g. his Shin Corporation telecommunication company and the purchase and sale of Manchester City United).
Her 265-seat win in the 24th House of Representatives marked only the second outright majority in a Thai federal election.
Why she might not be annoying
At least her name isn’t too difficult to pronounce or spell.
She is the youngest of nine children.
She achieved public administration degrees from Chiang Mai and Kentucky State University.
Her business acumen made her a highly respected figure in Thailand’s corporate community.
Thanks in no small part to her campaign handlers, she is hardly critical of her opposition.
Initially having no interest in such a position, she is the first female head of state for her nation.
