Sports Team
Their presence (as well as other professionals) was controversial, as several people didn't want professionals to enter the Olympics (as it was then mostly an amateur affair).
Every single game they played was a blow-out win, making the Olympic basketball very non-competitive.
Isiah Thomas was left off the team, and it was rumored that Michael Jordan wouldn't play on the team if Isiah was on it.
What was Christian Laettner doing on that team?
Some opponents didn't want to play against Magic Johnson, as they were afraid of getting his HIV.
Most of their opponents seemed to use more energy in getting photo ops with the team than playing them on the court (to be fair, they were undermanned and had no chance against these guys).
Instead of the Olympic Village, they stayed at more expensive hotels.
Two years later, O.J. Simpson's legal defense team ended up taking their moniker, 'The Dream Team.'
Subsequent U.S. basketball teams have been progressively worse as each Olympics and World Basketball Championships go by, yet they are still coined by the media, 'The Dream Team.'
Without a doubt, they are the greatest basketball team ever assembled.
Unlike more recent U.S. basketball teams made up of pros, these players cared more about representing their country than worrying about how it would affect their next NBA season.
While many complained about their pro status, teams such as the Soviet Union used loopholes to have their professionals compete in the Olympics long before the United States ever did.
Because of their presence in the Olympics, basketball became more of an international sport, and other countries started to sprout teams that were near par of the U.S. teams.
As a result, more international players started playing for the NBA.
Larry Bird played for the team despite his bad back and retired soon after.
Coach Chuck Daly remarked, 'It was like Elvis and the Beatles put together. Traveling with the Dream Team was like traveling with 12 rock stars. That's all I can compare it to.'
