    Birth name was Philipp Schwarzerdt
    German Protestant theologian
    Along with Martin Luther, considered one of the founders of the Lutheran Church
    Wrote 'Theological Commonplaces,' the first systematic treatment of Reformation theology (1521)
    Wrote the Augsburg Confession (1530)

Why he might be annoying:

    He got the name Melanchthon by translating his original last name (which meant 'black earth') from German to Greek.
    He was described as 'dwarfish, misshapen, and physically weak,' with Luther calling him 'a scrawny shrimp.'
    He was a firm believer in astrology.
    He wrote, 'Germans are such undisciplined, wanton, bloodthirsty people that they should always be harshly governed.'

Why he might not be annoying:

    He earned a degree from the University of Heidelberg at age 12.
    He was said to be the second smartest person in Europe, after Erasmus.
    He was consulted by 56 German cities on how to reform their public schools.
    He was so morally upright in his personal life that Luther teasingly asked, 'Why don't you go and sin a little? Doesn't God deserve to have something to forgive you for?'
