Royalty
    (May 26, 1867-March 24, 1953)
    Born in London, United Kingdom
Birth name was Victoria Mary Augusta Louise Olga Pauline Claudine Agnes
Princess of Teck (a duchy in Wurtemburg, Germany)
Queen consort of Great Britain (1910-36)
Married to King George V (1893-1936)
Mother of King Edward VIII and King George VI
She was originally engaged to George's brother, Prince Albert Victor, marrying George only after Albert Victor died in an influenza epidemic.
She was such a distant mother that she failed to notice that the nanny was abusing her children.
After she died, Edward VIII wrote, 'I'm afraid the fluids in her veins have always been as icy cold as they are now in death.'
As a collector of objets d'art, she would drop less than subtle hints to her hosts about how much she admired one of their possessions in hope of receiving it as a gift.
Some royal watchers claim that if this technique failed, she would simply pocket the item when no one was looking.
Despite its somewhat awkward start, her marriage to George was a success: he wrote her every day they were apart and never took a mistress.
During World War I, she instituted food rationing at Buckingham Palace and visited wounded soldiers in hospitals.
Her youngest child, Prince John, died from epilepsy at age 13; her second-youngest son, George the Duke of Kent, died in a plane crash during World War II.
Her estrangement from Edward was based largely on her belief that he had tarnished the throne by putting his personal pleasures ahead of his royal duty.
Some royal watchers suggest that she was euthenized to make sure that the mourning period for her death would not conflict with the schedule for Queen Elizabeth's coronation.
