Organization
    (1968-1984)
Formed by the merger of the FIFA-sanctioned United Soccer Association and the unsanctioned National Professional Soccer League
Notable teams included the New York Cosmos, Los Angeles Aztecs, San Jose Earthquakes, Chicago Sting and San Diego Sockers
Its average attendance never broke 15,000 a game.
Several of its teams only lasted a single season.
In only a few years, it doubled in size to 24 teams, spreading the talent too thinly.
After the New York Cosmos had success with Pele, other teams rushed to sign up foreign stars only to discover Americans remained indifferent.
Its championship was dubbed the Soccer Bowl in a blatant rip-off of the Super Bowl.
It provided a nice payday for a bunch of aging soccer superstars.
Pele's final game with the Cosmos sold out Giants Stadium.
After it folded, four teams - the New York Cosmos, San Diego Sockers, Chicago Sting and Minnesota Strikers - joined the Major Indoor Soccer League.
It contributed to soccer becoming popular with American youth.
It was carefully studied by Major League Soccer to try to avoid making the same mistakes.
