The Resume

    (June 16, 1946- )
Born in Barton-upon-Humber, Lincolnshire, England, United Kingdom
Birth name was Ian Matthews MacDonald
    Guitarist and vocalist
Member of Fairport Convention (1967-69), Matthews Southern Comfort (1969-70), Plainsong (1971-72), and Hi-Fi (1981-82)
Recorded the solo albums ‘Valley Hi’ (1973), ‘Some Days You Eat the Bear... Some Days the Bear Eats You’ (1974), ‘Stealing Home’ (1978), ‘Walking a Changing Line’ (1988), and ‘The Dark Ride’ (1994)
With Matthews Southern Comfort, recorded the single ‘Woodstock’ (1970)
Solo recorded the single ‘Shake It’ (1979)

Why he might be annoying:

He changed his name to avoid being confused with Ian MacDonald of King Crimson.
He later changed his first name to Iain (1989).
Oddly, ‘Matthews’ Southern Comfort’ (1969) is the title of one of his solo albums, not an album by the band Matthews Southern Comfort.
His version of ‘Woodstock’ is overshadowed in the US by the Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young version.
He left Matthews Southern Comfort by walking offstage during a concert at Oxford (November, 1970).

Why he might not be annoying:

His cover of ‘Woodstock’ hit #1 in Great Britain.
His arrangement of ‘Seven Bridges Road,’ including multitracked harmonies with all parts sung by himself, was copied by the Eagles when they covered the song on their live album.
He said about the hit single ‘Shake It,’ ‘[It] did precisely what it was supposed to do: it raised my profile, without lowering my credibility.’
He served as an A&R director at the Island and Windham Hill record labels.
