Author
    (November 28, 1628-August 31, 1688)
Born in Bedford, England, United Kingdom
    Baptist preacher
Best known for writing the allegory 'The Pilgrim's Progress' (1678)
Other works include 'The Holy City or the New Jerusalem' (1665), 'Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners' (1666), 'The Life and Death of Mr. Badman' (1680) and 'The Holy War' (1682)
Before getting religion, people described him as 'the ungodliest fellow for swearing they ever heard.'
He claimed to have heard the voice of God chastising him for playing games on the Sabbath.
In his sermons, he frequently denounced the Quakers, who, ironically, would later petition to have him released from jail.
In a poll conducted by Columbia University, 'Pilgrim's Progress' was named the most boring literary classic.
He was imprisoned twelve years for preaching without a license (1660-72).
After his release, he visited his parishes disguised as a waggoner to avoid re-arrest.
During the 17th and 18th centuries, 'Pilgrim's Progress' was the second-most read book in English, after the Bible.
Rudyard Kipling called him 'the father of the novel, salvation's first Defoe.'
