U.S. Senator
    (December 20, 1914-July 30, 2013)
    Born in Winchester, Virginia
Son of US Senator Harry F. Byrd, Sr.
Nephew of aviator/polar explorer Richard E. Byrd
Published the Virginia newspapers 'The Winchester Star,' 'The Shenandoah Valley Herald' and 'The Harrisonburg Daily News-Record'
    Virgina State Senator (1948-65)
    US Senator from Virginia (1965-83)
    Democrat turned Independent
He was known as 'Young Harry' well into middle age.
He was appointed to the US Senate to replace his father.
He also inherited his newspapers from his dad.
As a State Senator, he was instrumental in Virginia's 'massive resistance' campaign that shut down the state's public schools rather than integrate them.
He voted against renewing the Voting Rights Act (1982).
He officially became an independent, but continued to caucus with the Democrats and maintained his Democratic seniority.
He served as a Navy lieutenant commander during World War II.
He decided to run as an independent after the state party asked him in 1970 to sign an oath pledging to support the 1972 Democratic nominee for President, even though they were two years away from finding out who the guy would be.
He said of the decision, 'I would rather be a free man than a captive senator.'
He was a strong supporter of a balanced budget.
He extended fiscal discipline to his own life, often returning to the Treasury thousands of dollars from the annual appropriation for his Senate office expenses.
He also turned down several pay increases.
