Why he might be annoying:

He named all four of his sons John (but with different middle names).
During his report on the bombing of Pearl Harbor, he mispronounced the island Oahu as ‘O-ha-ooh.’
He did not get along with many of the ‘What’s My Line’ panelists, once refusing to speak to Dorothy Kilgallen outside of the show for six months.
He narrated the premier episode of Green Acres.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was the first national radio correspondent to report the attack on Pearl Harbor and the death of Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
He was one of a handful of people to appear on all three major TV networks simultaneously, anchoring the evening news for ABC while hosting ‘What’s My Line?’ on CBS and ‘Who Said That’ on NBC.
He was the ‘mystery guest’ on the last episode of the CBS run of ‘What’s My Line?’ (September 3, 1967)
In addition to anchoring the evening news, he was ABC’s vice president in charge of news and public affairs, in which capacity he won three Peabody Awards.
He also won an Emmy for Best News Reporter (1955) and a Golden Globe for Best Male TV Star (1962).
He resigned from ABC in protest after the network bumped coverage of the 1960 Presidential election back an hour to show Bugs Bunny cartoons and an episode of ‘The Rifleman.’
