The Resume

    (October 30, 1937-June 28, 2020)
    Born in Pastura, New Mexico
Author of 'Bless Me, Ultima' (1972)
Graduated from University of New Mexico (1963)
Wrote 'Tortuga' (1979), 'A Chicano in China' (1986), 'Albuquerque' (1992), 'The Farolitos of Christmas' (1995), and 'The Essays' (2015)

Why he might be annoying:

Although prolific, he was basically a literary 'one-hit wonder.'
He was accused by conservatives of promoting the overthrow of the federal government in 'Ultima.'
The accusations that he promoted sedition and (inexplicably) Satanism earned it a spot on the Top Ten Most Frequently Challenged Books in both 2013 and 2008. The book was banned in California, Colorado, Texas, and New Mexico

Why he might not be annoying:

Tony Hillerman called him 'the godfather and guru of Chicano literature.'
When he was 16, he sustained a spinal cord injury which left him temporarily paralyzed.
He started a literary retreat for aspiring Latino writers.
Bloomfield School Board in San Juan County, New Mexico publicly burned copies of 'Bless Me, Ultima' (1981).
On point, censorship efforts only served to lift sales of 'Bless Me, Ultima,' bestowing it a renewed relevance in popular culture.
He was awarded the National Humanities Medal by President Obama in 2016.
He penned a popular string of mystery books (the Sonny Baca series).
He said: 'I believe that every writer needs a guide, because writing is an exploration, and the exploration is not only for me, it's the the reader.'
