    Wrote the short story collections 'The Injustice Collectors' (1950), 'The Romantic Egotists' (1953), 'Tales of Manhattan' (1967), 'Skinny Island: More Tales of Manhattan' (1987), 'The Atonement and Other Stories' (1997), 'The Anniversary and Other Stories' (1999), 'Manhattan Monologues' (2002) and 'The Friend of Women and Other Stories' (2007)
    Also wrote biographies of Edith Wharton, Cardinal Richelieu, Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson

    He was born into wealth and privilege.
    Despite leaving Yale without a degree, he was able to enter the University of Virginia's law school.
    His first novel was published under a pseudonym because his mother considered it 'trivial and vulgar.'
    Although he called the Bushes 'a big family of shits,' he had no problem accepting the National Medal of Arts from George W.
    His explanation: 'I didn't accept a prize from George W. Bush, I accepted a prize from the President of the United States.'
    During World War II, he commanded a ship ferrying the wounded from the beaches of Normandy.
    His novels about the upper crust were compared to the works of Henry James and Edith Wharton.
    Gore Vidal wrote, 'Not since Dreiser has an American writer had so much to tell us about the role of money in our lives.'
    New York City declared him a Living Landmark (1991).
