    Commanded the 20th Maine during the civil war
    Held the extreme left flank of the Union line against a fierce rebel attack at Gettysburg (July 2, 1863)
    Accepted General Lees' surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox (12 April, 1865)
    Served four terms as Governor of Maine
    He was portrayed in the films 'Gettysburg' and 'Gods & Generals'
    He was a school teacher.
    He was known by his middle name.
    He made his brothers call him 'Sir' instead of the more affectionate Lawrence.
    His only credentials for becoming an officer were a letter from the head of his school stating his character.
    With 358 men, 28 officers and little ammo, he routed over 3000 enemy troops during the Gettysburg campaign.
    He fought in several major battles of the civil war.
    He was an abolitionist and believed the Unions slaves should have been freed before the first shot of the war was fired.
    He surprised the enemy with his unique thinking and execution of unexpected manuevers.
    He surprised everyone when after receiving Lees' surrender, he ordered his men to salute Lee.
    He never recovered from wounds sustained at Petersberg and later died of them.
    He spread his brothers (who served under him) down the line while marching, stating that should a mortar hit 'it would be a very bad day for mother.'
    He wrote to his wife constantly during the war.
    He reached the rank of Brevet Major General.
