Swimmer
    (January 20, 1956- )
    Born in Evanston, Illinois
Winner of five medals at the 1976 Summer Olympics (four gold, one silver)
Bronze medalist at the 1973 World Aquatics Championships
Won the James E. Sullivan Award as top US amateur athlete (1977)
    He has a thick mustache.
He has a slight resemblance to actor John Ratzenberger.
He is a devout born-again Christian.
He was disqualified over a meaningless infraction in 1973.
This denied him a likely gold medal at the 1973 World Championships.
At the XXI Summer Olympics (Montreal 1976), his winning time of one minute and 59.19 seconds in the 200-meter backstroke set a world record that stood for seven years.
His decision not to question that bogus infraction earned him UNESCO Pierre De Coubertin Fair Play trophy.
After swimming, he became a sports commentator for various networks such as ABC, ESPN, and NBC.
He has been involved with several organizations promoting good character and fighting childhood obesity.
Some describe him as the Sebastian Coe of swimming.
