The Resume

    (December 20, 1908-September 7, 1994)
    Born in Prentice, Wisconsin
    Birth name is Stanley Morner
Acted in 'The Great Ziegfield,' 'Kitty Foyle,' 'Christmas in Connecticut,' 'Its a Great Feeling,' 'Two Guys from Milwaukee,' 'Two Guys from Texas,' 'The Very Thought of You,' 'The Hard Way,' and 'Thank Your Lucky Stars'
Made 12 films with Jack Carson in the 1940s

Why he might be annoying:

He famously got bitch slapped by Joan Crawford in 'It's a Great Feeling' ('What's that for?' 'I do that in all my pictures!')
The film he's best known for has a bland/boring title ('Christmas in Connecticut').
He either turned down or outright lost the star-making role of Rick Blaine in 'Casablanca' (depending on whose version you hear).
He also lost out on the lead in 'A Stolen Life,' reportedly because Bette Davis said he resembled a gigolo (Glenn Ford would get the role and would become a star).
He was a studio-hopper, starting out under contract to MGM, before moving to Paramount and then to Warner Bros., where he finally found success.
He was never as successful as his partner in crime, Jack Carson.
He was an early supporter of Barry Goldwater.
His big break came in 'The Great Ziegfeld' (1936) singing 'A Pretty Girl is Like a Melody' (even though his singing was dubbed).
He became Warner Brothers' answer to Frank Sinatra.

Why he might not be annoying:

His comedic teaming with Jack Carson is among the most underrated, as they had excellent chemistry together.
He was best friends with Jack Carson in real life, as well.
He was married to the same woman for over sixty years.
He retired from films in the 1950s to spend more time with his family.
His eight-year old daughter, Kirsten, appeared with him in 'My Wild Irish Rose.'
'Christmas in Connecticut' has become a staple Christmas classic, and is frequently shown on Hallmark TV during the Christmas Season.
Bette Davis said of him, 'I wish I could be like Dennis, he has no ego, what you see on screen is how he is in real life, and damn he is married!'
He said, 'it's not the easiest thing in the world to be a success in Hollywood and still be the ordinary husband and father.'
His lack of success in movies is less attributed to his lack of talent than to his wish to be a family man over a star.
He had operatic training and he toured with an operatic company before finding work in films.
He sang 'Home is the Sailor' at Errol Flynn's funeral in 1959.
