    Also acted in films 'Tarzan of the Apes' (1918), 'The Ten Commandments' (1923), 'The Green Pastures' (1936), 'The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn' (1939), 'Sahara' (1943), 'God’s Little Acre' (1958) and 'Elmer Gantry' (1960)
    Acted in plays 'Cabin the Sky' (1940) and 'Waiting for Godot' (1957)
    Appeared in TV shows 'Gunsmoke' and 'The Bill Cosby Show' in the late 1960s
    He is often mixed up with silent film director Rex Ingram.
    He was an untrained actor discovered in Los Angeles while on a visit.
    He went bankrupt when he left films to go back to practicing medicine.
    He was arrested for violating the Mann Act (interstate transport of a minor for immoral purposes) in 1949.
    He was born in a riverboat on the Mississippi River.
    He was the first black man to earn a medical degree at Northwestern University.
    He became frustrated with playing stereotypical black roles such as porters and African natives.
    He had a notable career onstage in addition to his film work.
    Except for Paul Robeson he was the only black actor to reach leading man status in early Hollywood.
