    The original British settlement flooded and had to be moved.
    It lies on a major fault line and was struck by an 8.2 magnitude earthquake (1855).
    Due to gales blowing up the Cook Strait, it is the world’s windiest major city. (Average wind speed of 17 miles per hour.)
    Many ships wrecked on Barrett Reef at the entrance to its harbor.

Why Wellington, New Zealand might not be annoying:

    Its temperatures are moderate, rarely going above 25 C (77 F) or below 4 C (39 F).
    It provides excellent conditions for fishing, scuba diving, sailing and windsurfing.
    It is nicknamed Wellywood, for being the center if the New Zealand film industry.
    It was dubbed ‘the coolest little capital in the world’ by Lonely Planet.
    CNN Travel noted that ‘it may be the best city in the world for spotting wildlife.’
