    Formed at the Alabama Institution for the Negro Blind
    Members included Jimmy Carter, Bishop Billy Bowers, Ben Moore, Ricky McKinnie, Caleb Butler, Joey Williams, Tracy Pierce and Clarence Fountain
    Songs include 'Run On' and 'Higher Ground'
    They almost exclusively sing gospel.
    Their non-religious songs are generally cover versions of tunes by Stevie Wonder, Ben Harper and Tom Waits.
    The group continued to tour despite the health ailments of various members.
    They toured with Tom Petty and Peter Gabriel.
    Their version of 'Way Down in the Hole' was used as the first season theme of 'The Wire.'
    The group won several Grammy Awards.
