    (February 18, 1906-October 21, 1980)
    Born in Austria
Identified the developmental disorder that later became known as Asperger Syndrome, a form of high functioning autism (1944)
Chair of pediatrics at the University of Vienna (1944)
Head of SOS Children’s Village in Hinterbrühl (1964)
Birthday recognized on International Asperger’s Day
As a child, he bored his classmates with his obsession with the Austrian national poet.
Unbeknownst to him, Leo Kanner was doing virtually the same sort of research at a pediatric hospital in Baltimore.
Asperger Syndrome has become a trendy disorder with nerds and moody teens.
He frequently referred to himself in the third person.
Aloof and withdrawn, he may have had Asperger Syndrome himself.
His work did not become widely known until after his death.
His only sibling was killed in Stalingrad during World War II.
He called children with high functioning autism ‘little professors.’
Unlike Kanner, he felt autistics could make valuable contributions to society.
He may have stressed the talents of autistic children to save them from the Nazis’ ruthless eugenics policies.
During World War II, a school for autistic children he co-founded was bombed.
He thought autism, characterized by poor communication skills and highly specialized interests, may be an exaggerated form of ‘male intelligence.’
