U.S. Senator

The Resume

    (September 5, 1936- )
    Born in St. Louis, Missouri
    Attorney General of Missouri (1969-76)
    US Senator from Missouri (1976-95)
US Ambassador to the United Nations (2004-05)
    Republican
Is also an ordained Episcopal priest

Why he might be annoying:

He said he joined the Republican Party for 'the same reason you sometimes choose which movie to see — [it's] the one with the shortest line.'
His initial election to the Senate was probably aided by his opponent dying in a plane crash, forcing the Democrats to go with a candidate who had finished a distant second in the primary.
He was nicknamed 'St. Jack' by colleagues who found him holier than thou.
He said about his role in helping protege Clarence Thomas fend off accusations from Anita Hill, 'I fought dirty in a fight without rules' and 'I was trying to tarnish the reputation of his accuser by dumping stuff in the record where she didn't have any chance to cross-examine or confront.'
He officiated at Ronald Reagan's funeral even though Reagan was not an Episcopalian.

Why he might not be annoying:

He has been married to Sally Dobson for over 50 years.
As a Senator/priest, he delivered communion to Washington, DC, shut-ins.
He wrote, 'The problem is not that Christians are conservative or liberal, but that some are so confident that their position is God's position that they become dismissive and intolerant toward others.'
He complained that the Republican Party showed more concern over gay marriage than the deficit (2005).
He said about the applause lines during the 2012 Republican debates, 'They were for torture and electrocution of the people along the border and all that. That is contrary to the Christianity that I understand.'
