Why he might be annoying:

He is one of the least known astronauts.
He chose a dangerous career.
NASA forced him to attend a year long flight school before he could be considered for space flight rosters.

Why he might not be annoying:

He holds a Bachelor of Science degree, a Master of Science degree, a Doctorate and two an honorary Doctorates.
He surprised veteran pilots in the astronaut program by graduating at the top of his flight school.
Richard Nixon presented him with the the NASA Distinguished Service Medal.
