The Resume

    (March 6, 1926-June 26, 2012)
    Born in San Francsco, California
Won gold medals in the 400-meter freestyle and 4x100-meter relay and a silver medal in the 100-meter freestyle at the London Summer Olympics (1948)
Set five world and 56 US records during her career
Inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame (1966) and the International Women's Sports Hall of Fame (1985)

Why she might be annoying:

She briefly switched over to aquatic ballet before deciding she preferred competitive swimming.
When she won a silver medal in the 100-meter freestyle, she felt she 'had let down the world.'
She decided to accept the gift of a car after the 1948 Olympics -- making her ineligible for future Olympics -- because she was engaged and 'I didn't think I could successfully train and be a wife, too.'

Why she might not be annoying:

She won 34 Amateur Athletic Union titles, a record that lasted over three decades before Tracy Caulkins broke it in the 1980s.
She was the first woman and first swimmer to win the James E. Sullivan Award for outstanding American amateur athlete (1944).
She considered the swimming school she founded, rather than her Olympic victories, to be her greatest legacy to the sport.
She was married to Gordon Cueno for 61 years.
