Why Johnston Atoll might be annoying
Discovered by Captain Joseph Pierpoint when his ship, the American brig Sally, ran into it (1796).
Captain, Charles J. Johnston, about the HMS Cornwallis refound the atoll and named the largest island for himself (1807).
Guano was removed from the island until depleted (1890).
It was used as a US nuclear weapon test site.
It was used as a chemical agent disposal system.
All products need to be imported.
Why Johnston Atoll might not be annoying
It has a dry tropical climate with a northeast trade wind.
1,200 US military and civilian contractor personnel are stationed there.
HAM radio station KJ6BZ is located here.
They get satellite TV.
The U.S. designated it a federal bird refuge (1926).
Due to dredging and fill operations, Johnston Island grew to over twelve times it original size from 46 to 596 acres (1964).
Sand Island doubled in size for 10 to 22 acres.
The atoll is home to 300 species of fish.
The green sea turtle, the Hawaiian monk seal, and the humpback whale, call the atoll home.
Some of the birds on the atoll live to over thirty years.
