Why he might be annoying:

He became enraged if anyone spelled his first name ‘Johnny.'
Broadway critic Earl Wilson said of his onstage flailing, ‘He gives the impression that he's having a baby, though I know positively that he isn't.'
He was arrested by the vice squad for ‘lewd behavior' in a men's room (1951).
He was arrested in Detroit for soliciting an undercover police officer (1959). Although he was found not guilty on grounds of entrapment, he vowed never to return to the city.
He was an alcoholic and abused tranquilizers.

Why he might not be annoying:

He became a successful singer despite having lost 50% of the hearing in his left ear in an accident at age 12.
He underwent an ear operation with disastrous results, losing all the hearing in left ear and 60% in his right (1958).
Bob Dylan said he was ‘the first singer whose voice and style I totally fell in love with.'
He gave three command performances for the British royal family.
He is mentioned in the opening line of the Dexy's Midnight Runners hit ‘Come on Eileen.'
