Baseball Player

The Resume

    (March 1, 1855-July 10, 1935)
    Born in Virginia
Outfielder for the Washington Nationals (1872-73,1886-87), Chicago White Stockings (1874-77), Providence Grays (1878-85), Indianapolis Hoosiers (1888-89), Pittsburgh Alleghanies (1890), Boston Beaneaters (1890), and Washington Statesmen (1891)
    .302 batting average
    2,133 hits

Why he might be annoying:

He is sometimes credited with the first unassisted triple play in the major leagues (May 8, 1878); however, the play would not be considered an unassisted triple play under modern rules, and accounts of the game vary, making it unclear if it qualified as an unassisted triple play under 19th century rules. As a result, most baseball reference books credit Neal Ball with first performing the feat in 1909.
He bet $100 that he could catch a baseball dropped from the top of the Washington Monument (a height of 585 feet); after getting zero catches in three tries, he blamed his failure on the difficulty of seeing the white balls against the white marble of the Monument (1884).
He was arrested for pickpocketing (November 15, 1922); police searching his home after the arrest found a large number of purses and pocketbooks.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was described as ‘the most graceful batter who ever stepped to the plate.’
He was baseball’s first Triple Crown winner (1878).
He was reportedly the first baseball player to wear sunglasses while fielding (1882).
His hearing deteriorated after he was hit in the head by a pitch (1886); by the time he left baseball, he had gone completely deaf.
He helped subdue and disarm Leonidas Scooffy when Scooffy assaulted and tried to shoot lawyer Howe Totten (May 24, 1897).
