Military Personnel
    (May 1, 1896-April 17, 1984)
Born in Sackets Harbor, New York
    Four-star general
Commanded Allied forces in Italy during World War II (1943-44)
Commander of United Nations forces in the Korean War (1952-53)
President of the Citadel military college (1954-66)
Wrote the memoirs 'Calculated Risk' (1950) and 'From the Danube to the Yalu' (1954)
At West Point, his nickname was 'Contraband' for his prowess at smuggling sweets into the barracks.
Critics felt that his quick rise through the ranks had more to do with his friendships with Generals Eisenhower and Marshall than his talents.
During the Italian campaign, he ignored orders by sending his VI corps to capture Rome, allowing the German 10th Army to escape to the north.
He opposed integrating the US Army and as president of the Citadel opposed admitting blacks as cadets.
He was wounded by shrapnel during WWI.
Eisenhower called him 'the best organizer, planner and trainer of troops I have yet met in the American army.'
Prior to the Allied invasion of North Africa in WWII, he was spirited into Algeria by submarine to secretly meet with Vichy French officials and convince them to not resist.
He won the Distinguished Service Cross and the French Legion of Honor.
