A&R director of Columbia Records (1950-65)
Hosted the TV series 'Sing Along with Mitch' (1961-66) where audience members could participate while the lyrics were shown on the TV screen ('just following the bouncing ball')

Why he might be annoying:

He sports a billy goat beard.
    His catchphrase was 'All Smiles.'
He and Frank Sinatra feuded to the point Ol' Blue Eyes quit Columbia Records.
He hates rock & roll, stating, 'It's not a music, it's a disease.'
He hosted a TV panel discussion in 1956 with two psychiatrists, warning of the dangers of rock music and giving parents guidelines if their kids were affected.
As a Columbia honcho he refused to sign Buddy Holly and turned away Elvis Presley when Col. Parker asked for too much money.
His refusal to sign rock acts caused his dismissal at Columbia.

Why he might not be annoying:

He is a classically trained oboist and English horn player.
'Yellow Rose of Texas' was a #1 hit for six weeks in 1955 on Billboard's Singles chart.
He signed Tony Bennett, Frankie Laine, Rosemary Clooney, Johnny Mathis, Guy Mitchell, Jerry Vale and Johnny Ray, helping to launch their careers.
One of his choir singers was Bob McGrath, who went on to become a fixture on Sesame Street.
His 'Sing Along with Mitch' was highly rated and featured a young Leslie Uggams in an era where black entertainers were a rarity on TV.
The dot that was the 'bouncing ball,' guiding the pace of the songs projected on the TV screen was highly advanced for its time.
He has guest conducted orchestras around the world.
