(circa 1981-January 6, 2017)
Captured near Iceland (November, 1983)
Resided at Sealand of the Pacific in British Columbia (1983-92) and SeaWorld Orlando (1992- )
22 feet 5 inches long
Weighs 6.1 tons
Largest orca in captivity
Why he might be annoying
After trainer Keltie Byrne fell into his tank (February 21, 1991), he grabbed her leg, dragged her to the bottom of the pool, then passed her back and forth with two female orcas until Byrne drowned.
He was on the scene of another death when Daniel Dukes was discovered floating naked in his pool (July 6, 1999).
He is no longer allowed to do water work with trainers, since he does not seem to realize his own strength.
He had to be relocated to SeaWorld after being bullied by the females sharing his tank, Haida and Nootka. (He's whipped!)
He has never been allowed with his offspring out of fears that he would accidentally injure them due to his size.
Why he might not be annoying
The investigation into Byrne's death concluded that the three orcas, who were not used to having humans in their tank, had been 'playing' with her.
Dukes, who had stayed in SeaWorld after closing and evaded security to enter the orca tank, had died from hypothermia, so Tilikum was not to blame.
He has been the most successful orca sire in captivity, with 13 offspring.
He is popular in the splashing portion of SeaWorld shows, able to soak the first fifteen rows.
