    (April 21, 1838-December 24, 1914)
Born in Dunbar, Scotland, United Kingdom
    Naturalist, author and conservationist
Wrote 'In the Sierra Foot-Hills' (1894), 'Our National Parks' (1901), 'Stickeen' (1909), 'My First Summer in the Sierra' (1911) and 'The Yosemite' (1912)
Founder and first president of the Sierra Club (1892-1914)
Depicted on the California state quarter
Environmentalists Roderick Nash and Carl Anthony suggested that he journeyed into the Canadian wilderness to avoid the draft during the US Civil War.
He frequently complained that American Indians were dirty and unclean.
He wrote about blacks, 'One energetic white man, working with a will, would easily pick as much cotton as a half dozen Sambos and Sallies.'
His attitudes towards Indians changed dramatically after he lived with the native peoples of California and Alaska.
He correctly argued that the Yosemite Valley had been carved by glaciers, as opposed to the then-leading theory that the valley had been created by a catastrophic earthquake.
He successfully lobbied Teddy Roosevelt in person to get Yosemite declared a National Park.
He is the namesake for Muir Glacier in Alaska and California's John Muir Wilderness Area, Muir Woods National Monument and John Muir College.
