World Leader
    (August 15, 1976- )
    Born in Beshasha, Ethiopia
Prime Minister of Ethiopia (assumed office April 2, 2018)
Ended a 'frozen conflict' with Eritrea (armed conflict between the two nations had ended in 2000, but with no peace treaty and with parts of their border still in dispute)
Received the Nobel Peace Prize for ending the stalemate (2019)
He has been accused of using anti-corruption campaigns to target members of the Tigrayan ethnic group.
Although Ethiopia has the largest number of internally displaced persons in the world, he avoided visiting any refugee camps within the country.
According to bookmaker William Hill, 96% of the wagers about who would win the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize were placed on climate change activist Greta Thunberg, so his upset victory presumably pissed off a lot of bettors.
He served with the UN peacekeeping force in Rwanda (1995).
He helped negotiate an agreement in Sudan providing for a transition from a military to civilian government (2019).
Half the ministers in his cabinet are women.
When soldiers entered his office demanding pay raises, he defused the situation by ordering them to do push-ups – and dropping to the floor to join them (October, 2018).
He revised the country’s ‘draconian’ anti-terrorism laws, which had been used a tools of political oppression.
He ordered the release of hundreds of jailed journalists and thousands of political prisoners.
When a legislator asked if it was constitutional to release people who had been jailed for terrorism, he replied, ‘Jailing and torturing, which we did, are not constitutional either…. Torturing is our act of terrorism.’
