    (August 18, 1750-May 7, 1825)
    Resided in Paris and Vienna
Court composer to Emperor Joseph II (1774-1788)
Wrote many operas, symphonies, concertos, cantatas and chamber works
He is most famous because of rumors he murdered Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Mozart accused him of trying to poison him.
He grew to hate Mozart when his own career faded.
On his deathbed, he reportedly confessed to the murder.
His works are seldom performed today.
Scholars do not believe he really murdered Mozart.
He was originally a Mozart fan, once producing a Mozart opera instead of one of his own.
He never lived down the rumor that he was a murderer.
He was considered the greatest opera composer in his day.
His students included Beethoven, Liszt and other famous composers.
Music critics find his work underrated.
    He died insane.
He inspired the entertaining (but inaccurate) play and film 'Amadeus.'
