The Resume

    (July 4, 1941-November 12, 2012)
    Born in Cuba
Professional bodybuilder and three time winner of the Mr Olympia bodybuilding contest in 1967, '68, and '69

    Nicknamed 'The Myth'
Was five foot ten and usually competed at about 245 pounds

Why he might be annoying:

He called his wife 'goofy' and let her interfere with his training.
He continued to compete well past his prime.
He blamed racism and corruption for some of his failures.
He moved to Chicago after coming to the United States because he liked how the word Chicago sounded.
He refused to confirm or deny using steroids.

Why he might not be annoying:

He started working with his father in the sugar cane fields of Cuba at age 12 and at 16 joined the Cuban Army to fight against Fidel Castro's communist invasion.
While competing for the Cuban National team as a weightlifter in Jamaica he defected to the American embassy bring with him sixty-five fellow Cubans (almost the entire Cuban Olympic team) including the entire weightlifting team and the Cuban Olympic team's security detail!
After winning his first Mr. Olympia in 1967, he won the 1968 title uncontested.
When the uber arrogant Arnold Schwarzenegger saw him in person for the first time, he admitted he lost any confidence in being able to beat him.
He won his first Mr. Olympia title after less than four years of training.
He had some type of unpublicized beef with Mr. Olympia sponsor, Joe Weider who suspiciously switched judges around at the last minute for two of Oliva's Mr. Olympia's losing efforts.
He somehow survived being shot five times by his goofy wife.
At 28 inches he had the smallest waist in Mr. Olympia history.
He served 27 years as a police officer in Chicago.
He was the first Mr. Olympia to die.
Castro never allowed him to see his family again after he defected.
He died painfully from a kidney infection.
