Military Personnel
    (July 27, 1878-December 23, 1948)
Commander of Japanese expeditionary forces in central China (1937-1938)
Known as the ‘Butcher of Nanking'
Found guilty of war crimes (1948)
He served an ultra-nationalist Japanese government bent on imperialist expansion.
He came out retirement to command Japanese forces against China.
His capture of the Chinese city of Nanking can best be called a massacre, as the Chinese army retreated after less than three days of resistance.
After the city's fall, forces under his command brutally and sadistically raped, tortured, and slaughtered over 300,000 Chinese civilians.
He was certainly aware of the acts committed by his men, but did nothing to stop them.
He was not physically present in Nanking at the time of the massacre, due to ill health.
He allegedly told a confessor that he was ‘ashamed of the Nanking incident.'
His role in the Nanking massacre may be over-inflated, as others were in charge besides him.
He was hanged for his role in the Japanese atrocities (1948).
