Actor
    (September 28, 1916-January 14, 1977)
Won the 1976 Best Actor Oscar (Network)
Acted in 'Father Brown,' 'The Nun's Story,' 'The Trials of Oscar Wilde,' 'Far from the Madding Crowd,' 'Sunday, Bloody Sunday' and 'Lost Horizon'
Laurence Olivier discovered him on a tour of Australia, and then he had an affair with Olivier's wife, Vivian Leigh.
His studio wanted to promote him as the Best Supporting Actor for 'Network,' but he insisted on Best Actor - even though it really was a supporting role.
He campaigned so intensely for the Oscar for 'Network' that he had a heart attack a few hours after a 'Tonight Show' appearance and dropped dead in a hotel lobby on the way to a 'Today Show' appearance.
His co-star and fellow nominee William Holden said after the Oscar ceremony: 'If he hadn't died, I would have won another Oscar.'
He was the first actor to win a posthumous Oscar.
The Academy refused to allow his widow to accept his Oscar, but she did anyway.
