Why he might be annoying:

He popularized the use of wigs in the movies.
He made it acceptable for men to wear makeup (at least in front of a camera).
He popularized a product that he called Pan-Cake Makeup (still used today).

Why he might not be annoying:

He only came to the United States to see the St. Louis World's Fair, but ended up staying and building a cosmetics empire.
Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, Rita Hayworth and Buster Keaton used his products exclusively.
He created trademark looks for many stars, including Lucille Ball (the red hair) and Jean Harlow (the platinum blonde).
His son took over the business when Max died, and continued its success.
