    (August 13, 1840-July 31, 1899)
    Born in Cincinnati, Ohio
    Daughter of Salmon P. Chase
She was a spoiled daddy's girl.
She was a shopaholic, whose lavish spending sprees nearly sent her father into financial ruin.
She feuded with Mary Todd Lincoln after failing to attend a reception, and the First Lady, in turn, refused to show up at her opulent wedding to William Sprague IV.
Her marriage rested on her need for a man with a big bank account to subsidize her extravagant wardrobe and Sprague's desire for social status.
Her husband threatened to throw her out of a second floor window after catching her in bed with flamboyant New York senator Roscoe Conkling.
She described herself as 'Proud, passionate and intolerant, I had never learned to submit.'
Her mother died just after her fifth birthday.
Known to be politically astute, she served as her father's chief political booster, determined, albeit unsuccessfully, he should become President.
She acted as Washington, D.C.'s most gracious hostess during the Civil War.
Her husband was a physically abusive drunk who constantly cheated on her.
After their contentious divorce, she took back her maiden name.
Her beauty and elegance were said to be unparalleled, with one obituary stating, '... this remarkable woman came closer to being Queen than any American woman has....'
