Confusingly, there is a second, smaller Barstow, California, located near Fresno.
Its average high temperatures in July and August exceed 100 degrees.
It ranked as one of California's 10 poorest cities, with a third of its residents receiving public assistance (2006).
Its groundwater was contaminated with perchlorates, an ingredient in rocket fuel and explosives, resulting in a five day 'do not drink' advisory (November, 2010).
It gets an (in)famous mention in Hunter S. Thompson's 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas': 'We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold.'
It is a major transportation center, located at the crossroads of several highways and rail lines.
Its Desert Discovery Center houses the Old Woman Meteorite, the largest meteorite found in California and second-largest found in the US.
Motion pictures that filmed scenes here include 'Courage Under Fire,' 'From Dawn to Dusk,' 'Gattaca,' 'Erin Brockovich' and 'Kill Bill, Volume 2.'
