    (July 22, 1849-November 19, 1887)
Born in New York City, New York
Jewish American author most famous for the poem 'The New Colossus'
Sonnet written in 1883, featuring the verse 'Give me your tired, your poor-Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,' engraved on a bronze plaque and afixed to a wall in the Statue of Liberty
Died of Hodgkin's disease at age 38
Inspiration for the Emma Lazarus Federation of Jewish Woman's Clubs, an organization fighting anti-semitism and racism while celebrating Jewish culture
She was born of privilege and her father was a status seeker who craved acceptance amongst New York's Christian elite.
Two of her sisters were embarrassed by her outspokenness of Jewish struggles and followers of hers often made comments such as, 'She spoke like a man.'
She did not live to see her work attached to Lady Liberty as the statue itself wasn't put into place until 1888 and the plaque in 1903.
She was well liked and attended many social and cultural events with her Christian friends.
Her mentor was Ralph Waldo Emerson and the two of them corresponded frequently.
Her belief that there should be a Jewish homeland was documented 13 years before the Zionist movement of Theodor Herzl.
Her words brought inspiration to millions of early 20th century European immigrants seeking a better life in the U.S.A.
