    Appeared on Broadway in ‘Disraeli' (1917), ‘Hamilton' (1917), ‘Daddies' (1918), ‘A Young Man's Fancy' (1919) and ‘Rain' (1922-26)
    Appeared in the films ‘The World and the Woman' (1916), ‘Under False Colors' (1917), ‘The Cross Bearer' (1918), ‘Man, Woman and Sin' (1927), ‘The Letter' (1929) and ‘Jealousy' (1929)
    She dropped out of school at age twelve to join a traveling stock company.
    When she came to New York City, she posed as an ingénue even though she had already married and divorced a member of the stock company.
    She changed the spelling of her last name because she thought it would look better on a marquee.
    Actors' Equity banned her from the stage for 18 months after she was a ‘no show' for several performances (1928).
    She died of a heroin overdose.
    She became an addict when she was prescribed drugs to help her overcome fatigue from filming movies during the day and appearing on the stage at night.
    Louis B. Mayer was so impressed by the naturalness of her acting in the new medium of talking pictures that he made ‘The Letter' required viewing for all MGM actors.
    She received the first posthumous Oscar nomination.
    Ruth Gordon said, ‘She was the most beautiful person I ever saw, and if you saw her she was the most beautiful person you ever saw.'
