TV Series
    (September 27, 1986-May 11, 1991)
    Originally aired on NBC
    Situated in Philadelphia
Premise: A church deacon struggles with issues within the church and his personal life
Sherman Hemsley as Deacon Ernest Frye
Anna Maria Horsford as Thelma Frye Gregory
Clifton Davis as Reverend Reuben Gregory
    Jester Hairston as Rolly Forbes
    Roz Ryan as Amelia Hetebrink
    Barbara Montgomery as Cassietta Hetebrink
For a show with a church theme, Ernest was seen as being extremely dishonest.
Rosetta LeNoire and Montrose Hating both played the character of Leola Henderson Forbes.
When Barbara Montgomery and Elsa Raven left the show, they gave no explanation to their characters absences.
As the ratings deteriorated, they resorted to introducing a neighbour kid named Chris, who would come over and say outrageous comments, which often led to him being picked up and thrown out the door.
Like Sherman Hemsley's sitcoms, it often relied on slapstick humour.
Many of the show's plots were considered way too far-fetched.
A good portion of the show's storylines centered around Thelma's pursuit of Reuben.
It was one of the first sitcoms to have a predominately African-American cast.
Despite the show being set in a church, it often stayed neutral on religion.
The contrasting personalities of Ernest and Reuben was considered the main source of the show's humour.
Many notable actors like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Halle Berry, James Brown, M.C. Hammer and Casey Kasem made guest appearances on the show.
They ended the series with Thelma and Rueben getting married.
It gave Sherman Hemsley a chance to establish himself in another role outside of George Jefferson.
The show's intro was spoofed in Family Guy.
