Why he might be annoying:

His full first name is pretty feminine for a Marine.
He lied about his age and forged his mother's signature on an enlistment waiver to join the Marines at age 14.
Afraid he would never see combat, he snuck off from the supply depot he was assigned to and stowed away on a ship heading for Iwo Jima.
After a month, his original unit listed him as a deserter.

Why he might not be annoying:

During the battle of Iwo Jima, he jumped on two grenades and drove them into the beach's volcanic ash to shield three other Marines from harm.
One of the grenades went off and left 200 pieces of shrapnel embedded in his body for the rest of his life.
He commented, 'I never really thought of myself as a hero, period, but they chose to decorate me.'
During the 1960s, he joined an army paratrooper unit to conquer his fear of heights.
He survived a training jump in which both his parachutes failed to open.
When he was dying of leukemia, he told his wife, Ruby, 'This is not the way a warrior should go down.' She replied, 'Baby, you're a warrior no matter how you go down.'
