    Won the world championship at the Bermuda Bowl (1950)
    Popularized the high card point count system
    Wrote a syndicated daily bridge column, a weekly column for 'Sports Illustrated' and a monthly column for 'McCall's'
    Books included 'Winning Bridge Made Easy' and 'Contract Bridge Complete'
    Hosted the TV program 'Championship Bridge with Charles Goren' (1959-64)
    Inducted into the American Contract Bridge League Hall of Fame (1963)
    He gave up a law career to play bridge full time.
    He marketed a line of cocktail napkins with bridge hints printed on them.
    When he donated a trophy for a bridge tournament named after him, he bought a second-hand horse racing cup and had the original inscription chiseled off.
    His bidding system was described as 'simple enough for any beginner and accurate enough for the experts.'
    He sold over 10 million bridge books.
    After retiring from tournaments for health reasons, he played bridge socially with a group that included George Burns.
    He said, 'Bridge is for fun. You should play the game for no other reason. You should not play bridge to make money, to show how smart you are, to show how stupid your partner is, to prove that you are the greatest teacher since Socrates, to show off the latest fad in bidding or to prove any of the several hundred other things that bridge players are so often trying to prove.'
