    He was expected to win at Eurovision, but finished 9th, the worst placing for Britain until 1978.
    He rather self-importantly declared, 'I have represented Scotland throughout the world for some 50 years and feel I have an obligation towards her welfare.'
    He was one of the first trustees of the Scottish International Education Trust.
    He recorded a best-selling collection of the songs of Robert Burns.
    His recording of 'The Messiah' with Joan Sutherland prompted conductor Adrian Boult to call him 'the best Handel singer of the 20th century.'
    His recording of 'Song of the Clyde' was the first record played on Scotland's first commercial station, Radio Clyde (1973).
