Why he might be annoying
He described himself as 'a fat, bald guy who looked unkempt even in a freshly pressed suit.'
He was a chain smoker.
He was usually described as 'curmudgeonly.'
He called 'The McLaughlin Group' 'really bad TV' and said he joined the show only so he could put his daughter through medical school.
Fellow panelist Eleanor Clift noted, 'It wasn't lost on the rest of us that he continued doing the show long after his daughter had graduated and was a practicing physician.'
Why he might not be annoying
His oldest daughter died at 14 of leukemia.
He mentored younger reporters on the campaign trail.
He was unpretentious.
NPR said, 'He lived large and didn't suffer phonies.'
