    She and Richard married in secret because of her parents' disapproval.
    She was briefly in a psychedlic rock band called the Only Possibility and His Other Alternatives.
    She married disc jockey Milan Melvin on stage at the Big Sur Festival (1968) and divorced him two years later.
    She said, 'I suffered from comparing my voice to my sister's. In the end, it was a great relief to stop singing.'
    Richard, who she called the love of her life, died in a motorcycle accident on her 21st birthday.
    Inspired by a concert at Sing Sing by B.B. King, she founded the charity Bread and Roses to bring free music to people confined in institutions, including prisons, hospitals, nursing homes and centers for abused and neglected children (1974).
    She continued running Bread and Roses while battling endocrine and lung cancer.
    She appeared at a concert celebrating Bread and Roses' 25th anniversary wearing a turban to hide her hair loss from chemotherapy and joked about no longer worrying about bad hair days.
