    She answered an ad in 1998 to be the only physician at the South Pole (including her a population of 41).
    While stuck in the South Pole, she became aware that she had aggressive fast growing breast cancer.
    There was no way to get help to her, so she performed a surgical biopsy on herself.
    She administered her own chemotherapy.
    Of her South Pole experience she said she was 'introduced slowly to the notion of giving more than you have and using less than you need.'
