Why he might be annoying:

He was born into a wealthy family, and somehow lost the family fortune.
Since he lost the inheritance, he was held ineligible to receive a proper burial. In order to avoid this, he began lecturing to build up his name.
He learned meteorology through observation, and tricked people into believing that he was a god because he could predict the weather.
His nicknames were 'The mocker' and 'The laughing philosopher' because he held in contempt those preoccupied with ordinary human concerns, and laughed at them.
Anaximander refused to meet him.
One source tells us that he blinded himself with hot glass in order to focus on the realm of thought, rather than his senses (although this is probably not true since he also considered himself to be an empirical scientist).

Why he might not be annoying:

His theories are remarkably close to modern atomic theory.
He traveled throughout the known world, including India, Ethiopia, Babylon, Egypt, and Persia.
He lived to be 90 years old.
He stated that the Milky Way is a cluster of stars, which proved right.
When he was offered the opportunity to write the laws of his city, he declined realizing that it was outside of his realm of talent.
