    Works included 'The Calabash' and 'The Lantern'
    His college course work was interrupted by stints playing baseball in Negro Leagues.
    In 1954, he married dancer Nanette Rohan when he was 42 and she 27.
    He had 2 middle names.
    He refused to 'pass' as a white man when offered a Major League career.
    He co-wrote, with Billy Eckstine and Dizzy Gillespie, the jazz standard 'Sea Breeze.'
    He used his collages to illustrate, literally, the struggle for Civil Rights in the 1960s.
    In 1987, he was presented with the National Medal of Arts.
